She felt a strange disconnect as she thumbed through the cookbook. She'd bought it at a yard sale, hoping to find some comfort in the familiar ritual of baking. The pages were stained with what looked like grease and something that might have been wine. A pressed flower fell out, nestled within a handwritten letter. The handwriting was neat, almost frantic, detailing a recipe for something called "Lost Summer Cake," a cake she'd never heard of. Her breath caught in her throat. Her gaze darted around the room, as if expecting someone. A knot formed in her stomach. Why did she feel like she should know this cake?
