The scent of lavender from the garden was supposed to be soothing, but it did the opposite for Chloe. The DNA results lay open on the patio table, a stark reminder of the upheaval she felt. She breathed heavily, and the sun seemed too bright, the sky too big, the birds too loud.

She’d planned to spend the afternoon reading, but she couldn’t focus on the words. The familiar story of her life had been rewritten, and she didn't know the new plot. The faces of her family, once sources of comfort, now seemed shadowed.

She stood and walked aimlessly towards the gate. The world had changed somehow, and she wasn't sure what to do next. Everything just seemed… off.
