The photograph, faded and brittle, crinkled in Amelia’s hand. She’d tracked him down, finally, after all these years. He worked at the library. The memory of their shared childhood adventures flooded her as she walked to the reference desk. She greeted him, mentioning their old nicknames. He looked up, his eyes meeting hers, and a blankness settled upon his face. "I'm so sorry," he said, his voice hesitant. "I don't know you." She dropped the photo, a tremor running through her body. The letters on the spines of the books swam before her eyes, and she felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to weep.
