The basement was damp and smelled of mildew. Michael felt a tremor in his hands as he flipped through the brittle pages of the photo album. His father, a man of rigid principles and unwavering loyalty, had always spoken of his family's humble beginnings. Hard work, honesty, and thrift were the cornerstones of their family narrative.

A photograph revealed a different truth. His grandfather, in a tuxedo, was holding a champagne glass, standing outside what appeared to be a luxurious mansion. Beside him was a woman, dripping in jewels. The contrast was jarring.

He felt as though he were standing on shifting ground. He needed to understand. He felt an urge to run, but instead, he sat down again. The room felt closed in, the air thick with unspoken secrets. He couldn’t seem to process the image in front of him, how the reality he knew could be so different from the truth he’d been told.
