"The attic," the detective had stated, his tone neutral. "The body was found there." Sarah shivered, despite the warmth of the afternoon. The attic stairs were steep, and the wood creaked with every step. She felt a knot forming in her stomach.

The air grew musty as she climbed higher. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom. She reached the top, her breath catching in her throat. The cramped space felt oppressive, suffocating.

She stared at the floorboards, imagining… everything. She felt like she was walking on a tightrope, about to plunge into a bottomless abyss. She turned and scrambled back down the stairs, desperate to escape.
