He fumbled with his keys, missing the lock three times before finally getting the door open. Inside, the stale air of his apartment seemed oppressive, making it hard to breathe. Across the street, the newly-renovated mansion of Ms. Rodriguez blazed with lights. He'd always known she was… well, he hadn't known anything, really. He just assumed she worked in the local library. Now, the image of her, sipping champagne on a balcony overlooking the city, flashed through his mind, and he felt a strange, hollow ache in his chest. His hands trembled as he closed the door behind him, the sound of the world’s luxury pressing down on him.
