The chipped ceramic mug felt heavy in my hand, heavier than it should. Steam curled upward, yet the warmth didn't seem to reach the cold spot in my chest. Dad's announcement echoed in the quiet kitchen: "I'm becoming a Buddhist." A sentence that had felt like a door slamming shut.

He was smiling. A genuine, open smile that I hadn't seen in months, maybe years. It was infectious. Mom looked like she might burst into tears. I took a deliberate sip of the lukewarm coffee, letting it trickle down my throat. The taste was bitter, like regret.
