The flickering neon sign of the pawn shop cast an anemic glow across the rain-slicked street. Sarah hunched deeper into her threadbare coat, the collar scratching against her jaw. Another rejection email. Another day of ramen. Another reason to feel… well, heavy. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t come this way, not again. Yet here she was, drawn by the same hopeless current that always pulled her under.

Her boots crunched on the gravel as she entered. The bell above the door jangled, a discordant chime in the cavernous space. The air inside smelled of dust and forgotten things. She scanned the dusty glass cases, each holding a collection of cast-off dreams and broken promises. Her gaze snagged on a familiar glint of light.

There, nestled amongst tarnished silver and chipped porcelain, was a ring. A delicate platinum band, set with a single, shimmering diamond. Her grandmother’s engagement ring. She knew the design, the cut, the way the light caught the facets. A wave of nausea, cold and unwelcome, washed over her.
