She picked listlessly at her food, the forced conversation grating on her nerves. Her mother’s well-intentioned questions, laced with concern, felt like tiny needles pricking at her resolve. She just wanted to be left alone.

Later, she retreated to her old room, the posters of her college days still clinging to the walls. They were a painful reminder of promises made, and dreams unfulfilled. The space, once a sanctuary, now felt small, constricting.
