The stale coffee did nothing to jolt David from his lethargy. He’d missed his grandfather’s birthday, the first one in his life he'd ever missed. He stared at his watch, the seconds ticking by like a death sentence. The airport hummed around him, a cacophony of announcements and hurried footsteps that felt miles away from the quiet intimacy of the family gathering he was supposed to be a part of. He felt a deep, abiding sense of inadequacy. He picked at a stray crumb on his muffin, the taste of it utterly unremarkable.
