Gemotions

The accusation hung in the air like a stale, discarded donut. Sarah slumped in her chair, the harsh fluorescent lights of the university office seeming to intensify the shadows under her eyes. She hadn't slept properly in days, the relentless churning in her stomach a constant companion. Professor Davies’ words, “substantial overlap… original thought… academic integrity,” echoed in her head, each phrase a hammer blow. The essay, her final for the semester, now a potential death sentence for her grade. Her hands trembled as she absentmindedly traced the pattern on the worn wooden desktop.

The walk back to her dorm felt like wading through molasses. Each step was a monumental effort. The usual vibrant campus, usually buzzing with life, now seemed muted, gray, mirroring the monochrome haze she felt inside. Even the scent of the nearby coffee shop, normally a welcome aroma, grated on her. She fumbled with her key, the lock mocking her clumsy attempt to insert it. Inside, the cramped room felt even smaller, the weight of the situation pressing down on her.
