The apartment felt too big, the silence too loud. Ben had found the phone records, the pattern of calls too damning to ignore. A cold wave of something, very close to horror, washed over him. The world around him seemed to tilt, destabilised.

He went through the motions of his day, each step laboured, each breath a struggle. He avoided his partner's gaze, the tension between them a palpable thing. The joy had vanished, replaced by a dull ache, a constant pressure in his chest.

He found himself wandering aimlessly through the city streets, the crowds of people blurring into a meaningless mass. He felt lost, adrift, without direction. He clutched the phone in his hand, a tangible reminder of the deceit.
