The apartment felt too big, the silence too loud. Since her son had moved out, Martha had struggled to find a purpose. Every day felt the same, a dull, monotonous routine.

She wandered, aimlessly, into a yard sale down the street. The bright sunlight and the cheerful chatter of the crowd felt like an assault on her senses. She just wanted to go home, to hide.

Then, she saw it. Sitting on a shelf, amongst the odds and ends, was the bear. The one her son had loved. She stared at the familiar face, and a wave of something unexpected, something both comforting and heartbreaking, washed over her.
