The silence in the house was a suffocating blanket. David wandered through the rooms, each one a testament to his loneliness. He'd lost track of the days, of the weeks. He shuffled to the mailbox, his pace slow and deliberate. Inside, a birthday card. No indication of who sent it.

He sat at the kitchen table, the card a splash of color against the white surface. He ran a finger across the glossy paper. The card made him question even more of the routine that made up his days, and the future ahead. He didn't want to open it.
