The chipped porcelain mug felt cold in Leo’s hands, mirroring the damp chill that had settled deep in his bones. He hadn’t touched the toast he’d made, the butter already congealing on the surface. Sunlight streamed through the dusty kitchen window, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the air, a silent mockery of his own stagnant existence. His sister, Maya, was already on the phone, her voice a bright, brittle counterpoint to the hollow echo in the house.

He traced the faded floral pattern on the mug, a pattern that had always seemed cheerful. Now, the flowers looked faded and weary, just like he felt.
