He was supposed to feel joy, or at least a sense of closure. Instead, Thomas felt as though a weight had been strapped to his chest, making each breath a struggle. His sister, Sophia, flitted from room to room, her energy almost manic. He stayed rooted to the kitchen, staring at the empty space where his grandmother's chair had always been.

He ran his hand along the smooth surface of the table, feeling the absence of warmth that had once been so familiar. The house felt cold, even though the sun streamed through the windows. He felt… blunted.

He opened the refrigerator, his stomach churning, but found himself unable to eat. The thought of sorting through the pantry filled him with a quiet dread. He felt so… diminished.
