He had poured his heart into the "Crimson Comet Chili." He'd spent years tweaking the blend of peppers, the balance of spice, the specific cut of beef. Now, at the "Chili Cook-Off Extravaganza," he was reduced to a booth tucked away in the back, while "Spicy Sue's Comet Chili" was the star. He watched the throngs gather, the laughter, the praise. A dull ache settled in his stomach, a slow, insistent pressure.

He’d almost given up chili altogether, but then this event. The hope of redemption, a chance to share his passion. He took a long swallow of water, the cool liquid doing little to soothe his throat. He just wanted to go home. He closed his eyes and inhaled.

His competitor, Spicy Sue, approached. "Delicious, isn't it?" she chirped, her eyes shining with triumph. Her words hung in the air, a final nail in the coffin of his ambitions. He simply nodded, unable to meet her gaze, the taste of defeat metallic on his tongue. He couldn’t bring himself to even offer her a sample of his own chili, the product of countless hours.
