The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but it did little to chase away the chill that had settled deep within her bones. The email from the DNA testing service sat open on her laptop screen, its sterile language mocking her. “Results: Not a match. Biological parents… unknown.” She’d envisioned a connection, a missing piece of herself slotting neatly into place. Now, she felt a hollowness, a void where anticipation had been. She stared out the rain-streaked window, the city lights blurring into indifferent smears.

She slammed the laptop shut, the abrupt sound echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. The half-finished painting on her easel, a vibrant landscape she'd begun weeks ago, seemed to leer at her, a testament to her dashed hopes. Amelia scrubbed at her eyes, a sudden wave of exhaustion washing over her. She felt leaden, weighed down by something she couldn't name.

The phone vibrated on the table. It was her mother, calling to check in. Amelia took a deep breath, forcing a smile into her voice. “Everything’s fine, Mom,” she chirped, the lie sticking in her throat like a shard of glass.
