He kept fiddling with the car keys, his fingers clumsy and uncoordinated. The sunlight streaming through the window seemed too bright, too cheerful. Liam’s father wanted to sell the old fishing rod, the one he'd used to teach Liam to cast. It sat leaning against the fireplace, a silent sentinel of shared memories. A cold knot formed in Liam’s gut. The thought of it gone, of the stories associated with it being lost, brought a sudden, unwelcome rush of tears to his eyes. He felt utterly drained.
