The screen reflected her own face back at her – a face etched with lines she didn't recognise. Her daughter, Mia, was a stranger in plain sight. A life lived away from her, hidden in plain view. A dull ache began in her shoulders. The feeling was heavy.

She wandered through the empty house, the silence amplifying the thumping in her ears. The smell of dinner, which she had prepared meticulously, was now cloying. Each step felt laborious, each breath shallow. Her world appeared dimmed and blurred.
