The rejection letter felt heavy, a physical weight in her trembling hands. Sunlight, usually a welcome guest in her cluttered apartment, seemed to mock the dimness in her soul. She let the paper fall onto the already overflowing pile of manuscripts on her desk. The tiny, cramped space suddenly felt like a cage.

She kicked at a stray sock, the action a futile burst of anger. Her carefully crafted world, the one she'd poured her heart into, had been deemed unworthy. She slumped onto her worn armchair, the stuffing poking uncomfortably through a rip in the fabric.

"Another one," she muttered, the words raspy. The echo of failure reverberated in her chest. She found herself staring blankly at the wall, at the framed photograph of her grinning, younger self. That girl, bursting with ambition, felt like a stranger now.
