Gemotions

The invitation felt heavy in Elara's hand, a small rectangle of glossy paper promising celebration. She stared at it, the words "Retirement Party – Celebrating the Years of Eleanor and Charles” blurring slightly. Her fingers traced the elegant script, each curve and flourish a mocking reminder of everything she felt she lacked.

She found herself staring at the crack in the ceiling, willing it to grow, to swallow the perfectly decorated room. The thought of all the well-wishers, the forced smiles, the obligatory laughter, made her stomach churn. A vast emptiness had settled inside her, a weight that was always there now.

Later, she would stand at the microphone, a carefully crafted speech in her pocket. It talked of dedication, of hard work, of a life well-lived. Lies, all of them, or at least, things that felt painfully distant from her own existence. She adjusted her dress, the fabric feeling tight and uncomfortable against her skin.
