Gemotions

Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the storm inside Amelia. She hadn't felt the sun on her skin in what felt like a lifetime. Dust motes danced in the lone shaft of light, illuminating the chaos of forgotten things. Amongst the trunks, a small, faded box beckoned. Inside, nestled amongst dried flowers and yellowed photographs, was a letter. Her handwriting, youthful and bold, glared back at her. She opened it, the paper brittle in her trembling hands.

"Dear Mom," it began. Amelia's chest constricted. She remembered the day she wrote this, a teenager consumed by self-doubt. The words poured out, a torrent of unexpressed feelings, of longing for connection. She read on, each sentence a fresh stab of that old feeling, the heavy weight that had settled in her chest. A tear, hot and unwelcome, traced a path down her cheek, leaving a clean track in the grime.
