The information arrived at the end of a long, unproductive day. Mark stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. Professor Lee, his guide, his mentor, had departed. A feeling of hollowness washed over him.

He felt a strange numbness, as if his senses had been dulled. He closed his eyes, then opened them again, as if hoping the news would have vanished. But it hadn't.

The work ahead felt like traversing a vast desert, without a map, without water. He knew he had to reach the other side, but the journey seemed unbearable. He slumped in his chair, feeling utterly alone.
