Liam dragged himself through the day. The weight of his responsibilities felt crushing. The office seemed to close in around him. He'd been feeling the strain for months. He had opened the mail that morning, finding an envelope that made his pulse race. The handwriting was familiar, belonging to someone he had long since moved on from. He felt nothing, a strange emptiness.

The apology letter detailed a youthful indiscretion, a cruel act of betrayal. The words, a mixture of regret and justification, did little to soothe the wounds of the past. He felt a familiar knot forming in his stomach, a physical manifestation of his emotional turmoil. He tossed the letter aside, the paper rustling in the otherwise silent room.
