“It’s just a tree, Mom,” Chloe had said dismissively, her voice sharp. Now, standing before the vacant space, she understood. The tree was more than just a tree. It was a marker, a symbol. Her mother's legacy.

She'd come to the park expecting some sort of closure, some sort of peace. Instead, she found only this vast, vacant void, where the tree had once been, a constant reminder of loss.

She walked towards the empty space, her steps slow, her shoes crunching against the dry earth. A hawk circled overhead, its cry echoing her own unspoken grief. Chloe sighed and stared. All the air seemed to be gone.
