Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the storm brewing inside Leo. He dragged his feet up the creaking stairs, the scent of dust and forgotten things clinging to his worn jeans. Another rejection letter lay crumpled in his pocket, a familiar weight. He’d hoped, truly hoped, this latest application would be different. Instead, just more disappointment.

He kicked a forgotten trunk, its wooden side splintering with the impact. Inside, nestled amongst moth-eaten fabrics, was a small, ornate music box. He picked it up, feeling the cool metal against his palm. He'd never seen this before. His sister, Clara, would have been thrilled.

Later, at the reading of the will, Leo learned Clara had inherited their grandmother's house and substantial savings. He, on the other hand, received the music box and a collection of old, faded photographs. His gut twisted.
