She caught a glimpse of Mrs. Whitaker, through the gap in the blinds, emerging from the house, a Hermes scarf artfully draped around her neck. The sheer effortless elegance was like a pinprick to Amelia’s resolve.

Amelia’s own coat, frayed at the cuffs, hung on a hook near the door. The grocery budget for the week was already causing her a headache. She thought of the Whitakers’ recent trip to Italy, as chronicled on their perfectly curated social media. A wave of exhaustion washed over her.
