The apartment felt too big, the silence echoing her own emptiness. Eleanor had been trying to get David to open up, to share, but his usual openness had vanished, replaced by an unsettling secrecy. The curtains were always drawn, and his face was hidden beneath an unshaved beard.

She found a notebook tucked beneath his pillow. On the cover, the words were simple, yet terrifying: "The Loneliness of Eleanor." The first chapter detailed her perceived failings, her anxieties, her perceived flaws.

She felt a wave of nausea, followed by a dizzying sensation of being exposed. Everything, from their shared history to her most private thoughts, was there, twisted and reshaped to paint a portrait of inadequacy. Her hands went clammy as she thought about the future.
