The phone rang, shattering the silence. Sarah jumped, her nerves already frayed. It was the bank, reminding her about an overdue payment. She snapped at the customer service representative, her voice sharp and brittle.

She hung up, her face burning. The noise, the constant hammering, had been wearing her down. She was exhausted. It was a tangible thing, a weight pressing on her shoulders. She wanted to scream, to lash out at the source of the intrusion.

She had been working on a manuscript. The words wouldn’t come anymore. The plot had stalled and now her creative spirit was gone. She felt utterly depleted, the energy draining from her, leaving her hollow and empty. She slumped in her chair, staring at the unfinished pages.
