The sunlight seemed too bright. The colors of the garden, once vibrant and comforting, now appeared garish, mocking. Michael felt a knot tightening in his stomach as the drilling started again. It was a constant companion now.

He wandered through the house, seeking refuge from the racket, but there was nowhere to go. Each room seemed to amplify the intrusive noise. He considered closing all the windows, but the thought of the stuffy air was as unpleasant as the noise.

He’d always valued his privacy, his solitude. The renovation next door felt like a violation of that. He sat on the sofa, staring blankly ahead. He felt as though something precious had been stolen.
