The chipped porcelain of the mug felt cold against Amelia's trembling hands. Steam, barely visible, curled from the lukewarm tea. It was all a blur, the last few weeks. Her grandfather's passing, the mountain of paperwork, the endless questions from relatives. Now, this. She’d always admired the ring, a delicate filigree design with a single sapphire, a token of her grandparents' love. And now, she saw it, glinting in the dusty display case of a pawn shop on a forgotten side street. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage.

She went inside, the bell above the door jangling like a mocking laugh. The air was thick with the scent of old metal and despair. The shopkeeper, a man with eyes as dull as the tarnished silver on display, barely glanced up. “Can I help you, miss?” he drawled.

“I… I think I saw a ring in the window,” Amelia managed, her voice barely a whisper. She pointed, her finger unsteady. The sapphire winked back at her, a cruel parody of joy.
