He hunched his shoulders, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on him. The pawn shop’s grimy window reflected his haggard face back at him. He knew the ring, a ruby set in a gold band, belonged to his grandmother. It had been her most prized possession. The shop was dim, the air thick with the smell of decay. Each item in the window was a silent testament to someone's hardship.

He pushed open the door, the bell above it a jarring sound. The shopkeeper, a woman with a severe expression, watched him with narrowed eyes. "Looking for something?" she asked, her voice sharp.

"The ring," he stammered, pointing. "The ruby one. My… my grandmother's." His voice cracked, the words catching in his throat.
