The email notification blinked accusingly in the dim light of Liam's dorm room. He stared at it for an eternity, the cursor mocking his inactivity. He'd poured his heart into that application, working tirelessly to showcase his potential. Now, a cold knot twisted in his stomach, a physical manifestation of his sinking spirits. He let out a shaky breath, his shoulders slumping. He rubbed his temples, a headache blooming behind his eyes.

He kicked a discarded textbook across the floor, the sound echoing in the sudden silence. That scholarship meant everything. His parents were already struggling; he was their hope. He sank down onto his bed, the springs groaning in protest. He felt like he'd been punched.

He reread the rejection email, the polite phrasing and well-wishes somehow more insulting than a blatant dismissal. His jaw clenched, and he pushed himself to his feet. He had to think of a plan, fast.
