The phone call was short, abrupt. "He’s gone, Sarah." Her father’s voice, usually steady, sounded brittle. The news hit her like a physical blow. Her grandfather, her lifelong guide, the man who shaped her, had simply…left. She immediately grabbed her coat and went to the family cabin, where she found the door unlocked. Inside, the place felt empty, hollow. The scent of pipe tobacco was still there, but muted, faded. She touched his favorite armchair, the leather cold beneath her fingertips, and felt the first tears prick at the corners of her eyes. Her vision blurred, and she felt a painful tightness in her throat.
