The music seemed to amplify in Thomas's ears, morphing into a chaotic symphony of buzzing and thumping. He recognized Emily almost instantly. She was laughing, her head thrown back, a picture of effortless joy. He found himself paralyzed, unable to move, rooted to the spot.

He'd spent months carefully constructing a new life, a new identity. This was supposed to be a celebration, but it felt like a trap. Every muscle in his body felt tense, rigid. He felt like a deer caught in headlights.
