The world seemed to blur around Sarah. She’d found the phone bill, tucked away with the junk mail. A number, repeated dozens of times, belonging to a name she didn’t know. Michael, her husband, claimed it was a business contact. She saw his eyes, he couldn't hold her gaze. She was sure he was lying.

She slammed the phone down on the counter. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably. Her breath hitched in her chest. She grabbed a glass of water, and took a drink, but her throat felt dry and scratchy. Years of shared history, of whispered promises, of a life built together, suddenly felt like a fragile house of cards, ready to crumble. She felt like screaming.

She thought she would be sick, so she ran to the bathroom.
