He paced the confines of his small apartment, the worn wooden floorboards creaking under his weight. The postcard from Chloe lay on the table, a sun-drenched image of the beach where they'd supposedly spent a blissful summer. Chloe wrote about the freedom, the joy, and the endless days filled with laughter. He found himself clenching his fists. He remembered endless arguments, oppressive heat, and a constant undercurrent of unspoken resentment. He ran a hand over his face, as if trying to erase the memory. He stopped pacing abruptly, staring out the window, looking at the city lights.
