Gemotions

The phone had rung, shattering the quiet of Amelia's Sunday morning. It was the hospital. "We have reason to believe..." the voice had started, and the world had started to crumble around her. She sat now, paralyzed, the phone still clutched in her hand. The sunlight streaming through the window seemed mocking, casting long shadows across the room.

Her fingers fidgeted, picking at the loose threads of the cushion next to her. A knot formed in her throat, making it difficult to swallow. The air in her apartment felt stale, each breath a struggle. Her gaze drifted toward the photo on the mantelpiece, a picture of her, healthy, smiling, and blissfully unaware of the chaos that was about to erupt.

The thought of what this meant, of the uncertainty that loomed, was a crushing weight. She felt as though she might simply disappear, swallowed whole by the terror that threatened to consume her.
