He stared at the email, the words a cruel taunt. "Congratulations on the publication of your article!" Except, the article wasn’t *his* anymore. His name had been replaced. He slammed his fist on the desk. The sharp pain was a welcome distraction from the hollowness in his chest.

He felt an overwhelming urge to flee, to escape the confines of his office. He grabbed his coat, his movements jerky and hurried. He needed air, needed space, needed to make sense of the world. The world was suddenly a very unkind place, and he just wanted to escape it.
