He had the same smug face, even in a pixelated profile picture. Liam stared at the request, the corner of his eye twitching. "Brendan O'Connell wants to be your friend," the screen taunted him. He remembered Brendan's taunts, his rough hands, the way he always seemed to find Liam's vulnerabilities.

Liam pushed his chair away from the desk, unable to focus on the report he'd been working on. He felt a familiar hollowness in his chest, a vacuum where joy should have been. The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to buzz louder, irritating him.

He began to pace the room. "He probably wants something," Liam muttered to himself, his voice tight. Each step felt heavy, like he was wading through molasses. He felt an intense need to run, to escape something unseen.
