The email arrived like a punch to the gut. The subject line, "Party Update," foretold disaster. The party was cancelled. Amelia had spent weeks on it, meticulously planning a themed extravaganza for her daughter's birthday. The cancellation was due to a sudden illness. Her fingers trembled as she reread the message, the words blurring before her eyes.

She stood in her daughter's room, surrounded by streamers and half-inflated balloons. A collection of half-assembled party favors were on the desk. All the decorations she had lovingly crafted were now mocking her. She felt like a balloon that had been deflated and tossed aside. Her daughter would be devastated.

She sank to the floor, her back against the wall. A sob escaped her, and then another, the sound echoing in the empty room.
