The elevator ride felt interminably long, the slow ascent amplifying the internal turmoil brewing within Maria. Her breath was shallow, her heart racing like a trapped bird. She’d overheard a conversation in the break room – a junior associate, newly hired, bragging about her starting salary. It was more than Maria made, even after five years in the role.

She fumbled with her keys as she reached her apartment door, struggling to insert them into the lock. Finally, she managed to get inside, and the relief was small, fleeting. The apartment felt suffocating, even with the windows open.

She dropped her bag onto the floor and wandered into the kitchen, reaching for a bottle of wine. She hadn't wanted this, but the thought of pouring herself a glass of wine brought a moment of clarity. This wasn’t fair.

The feeling was sharp, a sting that radiated outwards. She needed a moment.
