"Is everything alright?" Brenda asked, her voice laced with concern.

Liam ignored her, avoiding eye contact as he continued to meticulously organize his desk. Papers were rearranged, pens lined up, and the calendar was turned to a new month. He was trying to find a sense of control over something.

The information had come during a casual Friday afternoon social gathering. A new hire had, in a moment of overenthusiasm, shared his compensation details. He'd been floored. The feeling in his chest was a slow-burning ember.

"Liam?" Brenda persisted. He knew he was being rude, but he couldn't help it.

He finally looked up, his face tight. “Yes, fine.” The word felt brittle in his throat. He forced a smile. It cracked instantly. He hadn't been fine for days.
