The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John sat hunched over his desk, staring at the financial reports. He’d tried to focus, but the numbers swam before his eyes. He’d been shocked by the revelation that his new supervisor, a recent graduate with limited experience, was making more than he was.

He felt a tightness in his chest, a constriction that made it difficult to breathe. The air in his office suddenly felt thick, heavy. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it a mess.

He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking under his weight. He’d always prided himself on his work ethic, his dedication. He felt betrayed. He thought of his family. He thought about his plans. The weight of it all was almost unbearable.

He slowly stood up and walked to the water cooler, the walk feeling like a monumental effort. He poured a glass and drank it in a single, desperate gulp.
