The attic felt like a tomb. Empty, cold, and heavy. The air itself seemed to press down on her chest. Amelia felt a cold sweat prickle her skin as she pushed the heavy door open. She told herself she was being silly, but a knot of tension coiled in her gut.

A small wooden chest sat tucked away in a corner. Carefully, she lifted the lid, revealing a collection of trinkets. A tarnished silver locket, a dried flower, a stack of letters tied with a faded ribbon. She reached out, her fingers trembling, and picked up the locket.

The sudden weight of the object in her hand made her want to drop it and run. She should have left this house alone.
