The last words of the letter, from the friend who had moved away, still rang in his ears. The friend, her best friend, who was no longer in his life. The mailbox stood at the end of the long driveway, a symbol of isolation. Inside, among the bills and junk mail, was a brightly colored birthday card.

The bold, childish handwriting on the front made him freeze. “Happy Birthday!” The inside was blank, except for the date. He didn't know who sent it. He slumped back against the car, the tears flowing freely. The image of the empty chair at his kitchen table filled his mind.
