"No, I can't," Martha choked out the words, her voice wavering. She couldn’t bring herself to do it. Her ex-husband's threats, the constant pressure to give up her hard-won independence – it was all too much. She’d been on the verge of collapsing for days.

She found the wallet in the elevator, a dark, expensive-looking thing. It felt hot in her hand. Inside was more money than she’d ever seen. She stared at it, her mind racing, the world spinning. Would this money solve everything? Could she finally be free?

She felt a sob rise in her throat, a sharp, ragged sound. The walls seemed to close in. The lift continued upwards. She needed to tell someone. She couldn't do this by herself.
