He paced the length of the living room, the Persian rug doing nothing to soothe his agitated energy. His grandfather’s pocket watch, ticking steadily in his trembling hand, felt cold and alien. His father had casually mentioned the watch, the one he always wore, would be sold to cover his medical bills. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. The air in the room felt thick, oppressive. The silence, punctuated only by his rapid footsteps and the relentless tick of the watch, was deafening. He stopped and stared at the grandfather clock in the corner, its steady chimes mocking his inner turmoil.
