He stared at the broken fence, splinters catching the sunlight. This time, the dog, a boisterous Labrador named Max, had truly done some damage. He felt a dull ache behind his eyes, a familiar headache that always appeared with the dog's intrusions.

He ran a hand across his forehead, and looked at his hands, dirty with splinters. The responsibility of fixing it, the cost of the repairs, the time he had to spend, all built up like a concrete wall around him. He'd have to make the call to the insurance company.

He couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t work. The constant fear of the escape was starting to take over his life.
